“. . . making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fulness of time to unite all things in Him, things in heaven and things on earth.” (Ephesians 1:9-10, ESV)

In the Bible, God has revealed everything we need to know to have fellowship with Him. Here in these verses from Ephesians is the revelation of the Trinity: 3 persons, yet one God. God is one. He is 3 separate persons who are each fully divine. Each of the Divine persons works together to effect our salvation and perfection.

We cannot fully understand how the Trinity is. But since God has revealed Himself as such in His word, we accept it as truth even if we cannot explain it or it seems illogical. Ultimately God remains a mystery to us, having revealed only what we really need to know necessary for salvation.

And we know from the Word that one of God’s attributes is His justice. His righteousness is expressed in His law by which He administers His kingdom. He requires all human beings to follow that law. Yet God is love. This is His essential and core attribute that undergirds all that He is and does. Although He demands punishment for sin, He exacts that punishment from Himself. His love is expressed in His redemption of sinners at the cost of His Son. He grants grace to sinners freely, not according to human merit or worth. He dispenses His goodness and generosity without demanding anything in return. He extends mercy to us in our state of helpless sinfulness. He provides deliverance, healing and guidance. He is longsuffering and patient as He withholds judgment to extend His offer of grace.

God knows everything about everyone. He knows everything about me and about you. And even though He knows each one of us in intimate detail, even better than we know ourselves, He still loves us. Which of us can make such a statement? The neat thing is, God can enable us to be as loving, forgiving, merciful and kind as He is. This means that we must stop judging others and ask Him to help us see our neighbors and our fellow Christians as He does so we may love them as He loves us. For all in Christ are united with Him and with each other.
