Confirmation Program

Confirmation at Trinity is a three year program which begins in sixth grade. During these three years, our confirmands learn the basics of the Christian faith as taught in Holy Scripture and Luther’s Small Catechism. Specific emphasis is given to the Old and New Testament, the Ten Commandments, the Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, Baptism, Holy Communion, Confession and Absolution, and what it means to be Lutheran.

Our Lord Jesus Christ as he celebrated the Passover with his disciples instituted the sacrament of Holy Communion. In this holy sacrament, Christ gives his true body and blood, together with the bread and wine and promises all who receive it in faith His gifts of forgiveness, life, and salvation that he won through his death and resurrection. Christ also warns us in his Word, in 1 Corinthians 11, that whoever does not receive this sacrament in faith or without understanding what they are receiving, is guilty of sinning against his body and blood.

Consequently, it is necessary to receive instruction in the articles of the Christian faith before receiving Holy Communion. To that end, we offer all of our first year confirmands (our sixth grade class) the opportunity to learn about this sacrament and receive Holy Communion prior to the day of Confirmation during May of the 8th grade year.

While we recognize that in recent generations, Holy Communion has been reserved until Confirmation Sunday, it is not necessary to link First Communion and Confirmation so closely together, as confirmation is an individual’s public confession of the faith that was given in the waters of Baptism. Moreover, there is no reason to withhold this sacrament from youth who have received proper instruction and comprehend what God is doing in this sacrament.

If you would like to enroll your child in our confirmation program so that they may receive instruction and participate in this precious gift that God gives to his people, please call the church office at (516) 931-2225.

Confirmation classes are offered during normal school hours for our Trinity Lutheran School confirmands. Classes for confirmands who do not attend Trinity Lutheran School meet at church on Thursday evenings from 7:00pm – until 8:00pm.

“These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”
