“And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. Then the Lord said to Cain, ‘Where is Abel your brother?’ He said, ‘I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?’ And the Lord said, ‘What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground. And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.'” (Genesis 4:8-11)

The biggest problem the world faces these days, despite what the media and the governmental institutions and leaders tell us, is how man and God can enter into right relationship. Once Adam and Eve sinned against God, mankind became alienated from Him. They did not trust Him. In addition, all human relationships broke down. Men and women, husbands and wives, and children became rivals, at odds with each other. They had to work hard at relating amicably with one another Or trusting each other. Chaos and violence resulted.

God resolved this problem by means of a blood sacrifice for sin. Abel knew this and offered the first and best sheep of his flock. Cain offered some of the fruits of his labor. He may even have offered the best fruits but he ignored what God had said. God rejected his offering and so he became jealous and killed his brother. Like his parents, he too tried to cover it up. Cain seems to have had the same idea that many people have these days, that God does not see or care what we do, that we can cover it up or ignore it. Until we acknowledge our sinful state we will not know we need a Savior, we need God’s solution to chaos, strife and alienation. Once we come to faith in Christ Jesus His sacrifice on the cross covers our sin and make us right with God.
